About this book
This book gathers the reflections of Allamah Muhammad Taqi Jafari (1923–1998), the Iranian philosopher known for his commentaries on Nahj al-Balagha and Rumi's Mathnawi, on the meaning of Ashura. Rather than retelling the tragedy, Jafari reads Imam Hussain's stand through human life, dignity and conscience, which he calls the 'pioneer culture' of mankind.
It opens with a series of introductions on how great historical events should be judged, the purpose of human life, Islamic human rights, and the principles of power, good and evil. Later chapters ask who Mu'awiyah and Yazid were, why the Imam's resistance became public, whether he knew he would be martyred, what the right to defend one's life means, and what qualifies a divine leader. Compiled from his speeches by the Allamah Jafari Institute, the work remained incomplete at his death.
It suits readers looking for a philosophical and ethical reading of Karbala. Translated from Persian by Shahriar Fassih. Published by Top Ten Award International Network, Vancouver, 2023.
