About this book
The Charm of the Red Rose reads Imam Hussein's stand at Karbala through the lens of moral philosophy. Abolqasem Fanaei, an Iranian philosopher trained in both the Qom seminary and British academia, asks which ethical principles guided the Imam's choices, while taking care not to project modern ideas back onto the seventh century.
Across five chapters he frames Karbala as a confrontation between 'Alawite and Umayyad Islam, examines the battle from a moral perspective, weighs the common explanations of the Imam's uprising, and presents Imam Hussein as a school of justice and dignity. A closing chapter separates religious from 'meta-religious' morality. Classical Shi'a sources such as al-Irshad and Nahj al-Balagha are read alongside modern moral philosophy.
Suited to students and general readers who want a reflective, ethical account of Ashura rather than a narrative history. Translated from Persian by Elham Farahani, edited by Hasan Shikoh, with a preface by Mohammad Jafar Amir Mahallati. Published by Sajjadiyya Press, Birmingham, 2025.
