About this book
Discovering God is the fifth volume of Shaykh Arif Abdul Hussain's Islam and God-Centricity series and its most inward-looking. Delivered at the Al-Mahdi Institute during Muharram 1442 (August 2020), the ten lectures apply the series' language of 'form' and 'essence' to the human being itself: the soul, its consciousness, mind and body.
The opening lectures consider the nature of God, the self, and the 'false identity' of a soul that believes 'I am the body', which the author equates with the Quranic nafs ammara. He then looks 'beyond Paradise' to the meaning and process of devotion, before exploring the inner purpose of salat, fasting, Hajj, zakat and above all dhikr, the remembrance of God, as means of realising God's presence.
Suited to readers drawn to spirituality and self-knowledge who want to build on the earlier volumes. Published by Sajjadiyya Press, 2023.
